Green is having its moment, and I’m loving it. Admittedly, I haven’t always been a big fan of green, despite growing up in Boston and always wishing I were Irish. I’ve been slightly surprised by how much I like this current trend.
After years of gray dominating the home decor scene, the warmth, depth, and variety of green are a sight for tired eyes. Part of what makes green so easy to live with is its connection to nature. The current trend towards biophilic design—a design philosophy incorporating natural elements into indoor spaces to improve people’s connection to nature — embraces green for its soothing qualities. Green communicates warmth, harmony, and new growth, bringing a gentle energy to a room.
When I redid our home office, I chose a bright chartreuse for one wall, a cheery and energizing shade that looks so fresh and crisp next to the adjacent white walls. Paired with navy, chartreuse, and white pillows on the window seat next to my desk, I still like it more than a decade later.
How and where to add green to your space:
TILE
Are you feeling a little bold? Consider adding green tile to your kitchen or bathroom to help create a comforting, warm, and inviting space. I love it with warm wood tones or soft white for cabinetry.
This green tile has blue undertones, adding a feeling of calmness to the kitchen. Greens with more yellow undertones bring energy and brightness to a space.
WALLPAPER & FABRICS
I love this flat-lay from Cowtan & Tout. Pretty shades of green in various patterns compliment the warmth and texture of that natural fiber wallpaper.
Add some fun to your living room or bedroom (these would be perfect in a girl’s bedroom) with these Mid-Century Slipper Chairs redone in a lively green pattern that feels fresh and interesting.
CABINETRY
Are you tired of white cabinets? Green is the new neutral, pairing beautifully with marble, as seen in this stunning laundry room by, Montreal Design firm, Blanc Interieurs, or soapstone for a dark and moody alternative.
I love how it looks with soft white walls and the warm wood and gold tones of the adjacent frames.
ACCESSORIES
For those who are a little commitment-shy, art and accessories are an easy way to incorporate a new trend without making a significant investment. I love these gorgeous Italian green glasses. They are a great way to bring some style into your home and life with a minimal commitment of time or money. They’re more versatile than you might think, elevating your dinner party alongside shades of blue, gold, cream, and/or soft reds or pinks.
Soft whites, warm browns, and accents of coral balance the depth and brightness of the green lamp, plant, and painting to create an interesting and cohesive furniture plan. There are so many shades of green; whether you’re feeling bold or wanting to play it safe, a little green can go a long way to elevating your space and bringing nature indoors.
