How to Make Your Space More Interesting with Original Art

Adding original artwork to your home is one of the best ways to bring character and depth to your space. Art not only adds a layer of sophistication but also infuses your home with personality, offering a unique way to express who you are. Just like the books on your shelves, the art you choose tells a story about you. However, I often see blank walls because selecting art can be intimidating, overwhelming, and sometimes even confusing, which leads many people to avoid it altogether.

A great way to start your art collection is by focusing on affordable pieces that are easy to display. Works on paper are a fantastic option — they are typically more budget-friendly and often smaller in size, allowing for flexibility in how and where you hang them. You can easily experiment with different frames and placements without the pressure of committing to a large, expensive piece.

What Are Works on Paper?

According to Christie’s Auction House, “works on paper” encompass a variety of mediums, from drawings and paintings to prints and multiples. Traditionally, artists use paper to test new ideas or explore larger concepts with the immediacy of pencil, charcoal, or other materials. This process gives us an intimate glimpse into the artist’s creative flow. For emerging collectors or casual art enthusiasts, works on paper provide an accessible, low-risk entry point into the world of art collecting.

Because of their affordability, works on paper allow collectors to acquire pieces by well-known, established artists without breaking the bank. But beyond big-name artists, there’s a wealth of incredible pieces being produced by local and emerging artists, making it easy to find original works that speak to you.

Here are a few of my favorite works on paper, with prices ranging from $175 to $2500:

Nicole Brooklyn Artist Butterly Art

Every time I take the train to the City, I stop by Grumpy’s for a latte. Their coffee is fantastic, and they always exhibit some local art that piques my interest. I love these watercolors by Brooklyn artist Nicole. For $175, they come framed and ready to hang.

Japan Yayoi Kusama Art

This offset Lithograph poster was produced for the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, Japan, by Yayoi Kusama. Kusama was a prominent and influential pop artist in the 1960s  whose work is in major museums worldwide, including the Tate, Guggenheim, and Los Angeles MOCA. This 16×16” piece is estimated to cost $1200 -$2500 at auction.

Jeffrey Palladini Woman Art

I’ve long been a fan of artist Jeffrey Palladini, and his works on paper are no less impressive than his similar works on Wood Panels. This 22×30 textured Oil and Charcoal on paper is part of a new series by Palladini of works on paper. I love the deep, saturated colors and minimalistic approach, which is an interesting contrast with the surface texture. It has a definite pop art feel and a mood of serenity, wistful daydreaming, or pensive thought by the water.
