Spring is here in New England, and the beautiful springtime colors, along with new projects and challenges, have energized me! Giving your space a fresh look, much like a change of seasons, can usher in a new phase of life, offer a new way to experience a familiar room, or completely transform a space to suit new circumstances.
Our Rhode Island project marks a new chapter for both us and the house. Built in 1989, we purchased the home in 2015. Ten years later, not only is the house seriously tired, but after a second floor leak damaged the master bedroom and kitchen, it also needed some significant repairs.

Our Narragansett home is not your average beach house. An Acorn Deck House, it is built using a post-and-beam building system that allows for open floor plans without interior load bearing walls. The company, which has been around since builds homes in various styles from coastal to mountain modern, and is an early example of custom pre-fab construction.
The initial work wasn’t glamorous. We removed all the hardwood floors during the first phase to install a new hydronic radiant heat system. The existing pipes had been embedded in the concrete foundation, which caused some pipes to corrode—an expensive but non-negotiable repair.

Replacing the doors and some windows was a no-brainer, as they were tired and outdated. Traditionally, Deck House windows and doors are trimmed in mahogany, one of their signature design elements. For many Deck House enthusiasts, changing this detail is pure blasphemy. However, my vision was for white walls and trim, so that’s the direction we took.
Redesigning the kitchen and bathrooms will make the most significant difference in the house. We chose warm woods, neutrals, natural stone, and touches of green—perfect for a home that isn’t your typical beach house. Deck Houses are rooted in mid-century modernism, with expansive walls of windows, an open floor plan, and high ceilings.

All bathroom tile has been ordered, and soon the fun begins with cabinet installation and tile work! Stay tuned for more project boards and photos.
